Gretel is visiting Siri’s friend Otto.
She proudly explains to the other children that she has a new pet: a flea. Gretel promises to introduce Siri and the Ottos to the flea if she gets to try out all of their instruments: the trumpet, drums, maracas and harmonica.
Gretel plays to her heart’s content out on the yard and the noise is deafening! But it seems that the grown-ups can’t stop her since they are too scared of the flea. After a while it is finally time for everyone to meet Gretel’s flea. But to their disappointment it has disappeared! Has it gone to the flea market to do some shopping?
The characters found in the Siiri books are among the most loved in Finnish children’s literature. Siiri is an energetic little girl, and Little Otto, Middle Otto, and Big Otto are her best friends. The Siiri books, created by author Tiina Nopola (b. 1955) and illustrator Mervi Lindman (b.1971), bring the everyday moments that mean so much to pre-school children to life.
