Kati Kovács’s new graphic novel Kaya is a story, about a woman, longing for freedom, and a crime.
Fair-haired Kaya gets a break from her overly caring mother when she goes with her friend Margit to an art camp in the depths of the forest. However, in the forest, there lurks a man who has been watching Kaya and Margit for a long time…
Kaya is a new masterpiece from Kati Kovács, who received the first state award for comic art in 2014. The justification stated, “Kovács’s powerful female characters challenge traditional gender roles and have inspired two generations of young comic artists to question the established norms of the field.”

‘Despite being black and white drawings, the work is full of shades; there is the black of a thundercloud, the curling grain patterns of wood, the enveloping darkness, either soft like cotton candy or sharp like a razor blade – depending on the mood. The most traumatic moments are depicted in shadows and blurs.
Many could tell a similar story, but Kovács’s artistic depiction makes it a masterpiece of art.’ — Ilkka Valpasvuo, Kulttuuritoimitus
