The 2024 Anni Swan Medal is awarded to Siiri Enoranta for her utopian novel DAUGHTERS OF THE WORLD (Maailmantyttäret, WSOY 2022).
This stunning multi-level adventure novel takes place in the The Earth Home where the lives of five different protagonists are intertwined. In addition to adventure, DAUGHTERS OF THE WORLD is a story of friendship and hope. Enoranta’s masterful and stunningly rich work is a wondrous journey of reflection on religion and art, the meaning of existence, prayers to Yokoono, the mother of art, gentleness and creativity, study and thirst for knowledge and understanding. And dancing, both for joy and pleasure, and to settle disputes and disagreements.
DAUGHTERS OF THE WORLD is Enoranta’s tenth novel and confirms her already phenomenal skill as a creator of whole, intact worlds. Enoranta seamlessly weaves together issues of egalitarian social systems, consumerist capitalism and the regeneration of nature and species diversity. At a time when life on the brink of ecocatastrophe brings much hopelessness and sadness, Enoranta makes us look at today’s world differently and at the same time encourages us to strive for a different kind of future.
Every three years, IBBY Finland (International Board on Books for Young People) awards the Anni Swan Medal to a Finnish Children’s or YA book. The medal is awarded to a work of high artistic quality and originality of subject matter and expression.
